Paraguay: Started campaign Operation Monsanto

Monsanto transnational fulfilled an important role in the coup against the Government of Lugo.

Against the decision of the coup, Paraguayan Government increase the use of genetically modified seeds for crops of corn and cotton, the population has implemented the campaign Operation Monsanto which was a popular response to the Government decision.

The campaign is being conducted with a series of activities against companies and Paraguayan institutions linked to the American multinational.
 

The movement Paraguay Resiste (Paraguay Resist) , which is one of the organizations participating in the campaign, had already criticized the increase provided by Monsanto genetically modified seeds a long time ago, described as disastrous for the land and the health of farmers to genetically modified seeds that require the use of glyphosate for their development. The herbicide is the subject of studies and complaints in the world for its high toxicity.

The popular reaction has been driven because in early August, the holder of the portfolio of health Paraguay, Antonio Arbo, decided to approve the use of a type of genetically modified corn developed by Monsanto.

Therefore, farmers also raised their voice of protest calling the decision of the Government to promote the use of corn produced by Monsanto, as an attack to the Paraguayan food culture.

According to Paraguay Resiste, the advance of Monsanto in Paraguay will make disappear the national seed. For this reason, the small peasant producers jobs are in danger.
