Guatemala: Population call for consult by gold mine

Strong opposition to irresponsible mining.

San Rafael Las Flores, Guatemala, multiple social organizations are demanding more than eight months ago a query to the population to decide if the mining company San Rafael may continue to run in the municipality.

 

The requirement is because the mining company has never explained how scans and extracted gold and silver from the region, or what chemicals used, and therefore oppose its operation. The transnational not cares mislead the population because its only purpose is to exploit non-renewable and renewable natural resources of the territory.
 
It is also feared, as well as in San Rafael Las Flores, could be Mataquescuintla, Jalapa, environmental problems by chemicals spilled, since it is where the zone of water recharge of the Department and is born of the slave River.
 
While the mining entrepreneurs are said to be respectful of the law, the Paraguayan Government officials maintain a silent accomplice.
