Mexico: Peasants against mega-projects

Mega-projects: mega-pollution.
So-called mega-projects, which extract the mineral and other natural resources, are taking advantage of economic reforms in Mexico and treaties such as the North American free trade treaty.

This is how, for many years in many parts of Mexico, large corporations, mostly of foreign owners associated with wealthy Mexicans have developed huge projects in rural areas.

Consequently, successive Mexican governments have prioritized the foreign investment as a development policy, even at the cost of environmental destruction and the displacement of people.

The families and communities affected by the impact often are forced to migrate. Projects receive official support and are defended by the federal Government that serves the interests of mining companies, however, repressive policies against the protests of poor settlers farmers.

The companies and their supporters have promised jobs and economic development, but affected communities say that more people have lost their jobs and their way of life because of the economic consequences and negative environmental impact.
