Ecuador: Congress of farmers

Constant struggle for the land that belongs to them.
About 2,000 delegates from the coast, Sierra and Ecuadorian Amazon will meet 15 and November 16 into Guayas (Ecuador) in the Congress of the Landless  where will discuss the right of peasants that have an effective access to land, to food and food sovereignty, also will analyze the new agrarian legislation.

The peasant population faces decades serious problems related to the possession and accumulation of land and with the concentration of land and water, issues that are not resolved, inter alia, by the absence of effective policies directed to the population in the field and at the lack of implementation of programs as the "land Plan", through which should be redeployed, until 2013, two million hectares, but so far, only were delivered 17 thousand hectares.

The struggle of peasants is a long history. The consequences were, as always: criminalisation and persecution against those who fought and are fighting for their demands.

The date of the Congress, on November 15, will be 90 years of the massacre carried out in Guayaquil. On that date, workers paralyzed the port of Guayaquil to vindicate their rights and as a resulted ocurred the killing of hundreds of them by the army and the police. The bodies of the strikers were thrown into a river. Until today, the number of workers killed is not known.
