Paraguay: Resistance to genetically modified organisms grow

Fighting against the Empire of transnational corporations.
Without a doubt, after the parliamentary coup against President Fernando Lugo, the coup leader Federico Franco, supported by the transnational American Monsanto (who monopolizes 90% of the production of transgenic seeds in the world) strengthened its power turning Paraguay into the ideal country for the massive introduction of GMOs.

Therefore, the Paraguayan Government is defending party arm with the import of GM seeds resorting to repression to silence the protests of producers and rural organizations.

The first decision of Franco, to assume power, was authorize the purchase of genetically modified seeds and agrochemicals needed for use in the increase in cotton production. This did not comply with the Cartagena Protocol, ratified by Paraguay in 2003, requiring prior risk evaluations before releasing genetically modified organisms into the environment.

Thus, not only liquidaba the use of indigenous seeds, but that step opened to the use of pesticides highly risky for the health of the farmers, the environment and terrain.

But also just announced, the Government of Franco, which permits will be extended to large companies to import all necessary for the production of transgenic maize.

It should take into account that the maize is one of the major productions of the agro Paraguayan. Now enters competitions unfair with seeds for five varieties of transgenic food, most, of course, acquired by Monsanto.
